Air-conditioning technician charged with promoting terrorism

An air-conditioning technician was charged in a magistrate's court in Kuala Lumpur today to charges of promoting terrorist acts and possession of terrorism-related items.

However, no plea was recorded after the charges were read out to Ahmad Faris Zulkefli before Magistrate Siti Radziah Kamarudin.

Ahmad Faris, 20, is charged with knowingly promoting the commission of terrorist acts through a WeChat application with the name 'Pak Kodi' and using the name 'mujahidin333' as WeChat ID.

The offence was allegedly committed at a house at 16-0-2, Kelumpuk Teratai 16, Jalan 5/56 AU3 in Keramat, Kuala Lumpur, between June 9 and July 30 this year.

The charge is made under Section 130G(a) of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail sentence of up to 30 years and a fine as well, if Ahmad Fair is found guilty.

Ahmad Faris is also charged with possession of terrorism-related items, comprising a black shirt with Jawi writing on it and pictures associated with the Islamic State (IS) militant group on an Ipad Mini at the same place at 10.45am last Aug 29.

This offence, under Section 130JB(1)(a) of the Penal Code, provides for an imprisonment of up to seven years, or fine, and liable to forfeiture of the items concerned, if he is found guilty.

The court set Oct 28 for mention of the case.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Munirah Shamsudin@Baharum, while Ahmad Faris was not represented.
