Pakatan Harapan lawmakers will urge the government to consider drafting a National Trust Act to provide long-term safeguards for the public with regard to the development of the Taman Tugu project.

PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli said this following a two-hour meeting with project developer Khazanah Nasional Berhad at Menara UEM in KL Sentral today.

"We received a good briefing from the whole project team today. The sharing session was more than adequate for us to make an assessment.

"But there are a few areas that we will make further feedback to strengthen safeguards," said Rafizi, who was accompanied by PKR's Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul, DAP's Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming and Amanah's Kuala Krai MP Dr Hatta Ramli.

Among others, Rafizi said the idea for a National Trust Act was to make sure that all areas surrounding the project remains in the public's hands.

"While we understand Khazanah's commitment to give the park to the public in a treaty, we want to make sure that the land ownership is not overturned in the future," said the Pandan MP.

Johari said Harapan lawmakers would raise the issue at the upcoming parliamentary session.

He added that placing the project under a National Trust Act would ensure that the people's rights are not commercialised.

"I was met by army veterans who were concerned over the project but we received an assurance that nothing would be removed from the area. But upgrades would be made," he said.

Hatta similarly said that drafting the Act would ensure the public's confidence in the project, which would turn the area around the national monument into Kuala Lumpur's Central Park.

Rafizi had previously cautioned Khazanah to tread carefully and be transparent on the RM650 million project, or risk being likened to embattled state investment fund 1MDB.
