The body of Azri Mohamed, who died while in police custody about two weeks ago, arrived today at the Kuala Lumpur hospital from Kota Baru for a second post-mortem.

The family’s lawyer Raul Lee Bhaskaran told Malaysiakini that they met with the team of doctors this afternoon.

“We just left the morgue. The forensic team told the family that the post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow.

“I am just not sure whether it will be done in the morning or after Friday prayers,” he said when contacted.

Azri’s sister Norsyazmira Mohamed had on Tuesday filed an application at the High Court in Kota Baru for a second post-mortem to be conducted and it was granted by judicial commissioner Ahmad Bache later the same day.

Azri, who was first arrested on July 10 over a minor drug offence for possession, had previously been detained in the Pengkalan Chepa prison in Kota Baru.

Lawyer and Padang Serai parliamentarian N Surendran said Azri was taken to the Kota Baru Hospital from the prison on Aug 15, where he fell into a coma and eventually died on Sept 14.

Surendran reportedly said that the second post-mortem application was made because Norsyazmira was dissatisfied with results of the first one.

This is as the pathologist had claimed that the death was caused by an infection, even though Azri’s entire large intestine was removed and he had told his sister he had been beaten while in prison.
