Malaysia’s sole representative, Dr Fauziah Hasan, may have been freed together with 10 other members of the ‘Women’s Boat to Gaza’ (WBG) mission, but a local NGO still wants the United Nations (UN) to be firm in its actions.

Pertubuhan Kebajikan Serantau Muslim president Raja Ahmad Iskandar said this is because the global community, including Malaysia, was tired over the actions of Israel.

Raja Ahmad said the detention of members of the mission on Wednesday should not have occurred and should not be repeated.

He pointed out how the members’ eventual release was proof that they did not pose any violent threats.

“Those detained were mostly women; we can see how cowardly the Israeli regime is against 13 women who were unarmed. Even a peaceful mission is seen as a huge threat to the Israeli government,” he told reporters today.

Raja Ahmad, together with 25 other NGOs, had earlier submitted a memorandum to a UN Malaysia representative at Wisma UN in Kuala Lumpur.

The memorandum was also submitted to the UN’s coordination specialist Juanita Joseph.

Meanwhile, Raja Ahmad said the detention of the mission’s members would only give more reasons for terror group Islamic State (IS) to continue its immoral activities.

The recent detention had also shown how the UN has failed to play its role, added Raja Ahmad.

“If this (detention) continues and there is no action from the UN, we are very confident that the issue of terrorism will not have its end.

“Certain groups will use this to commit terror acts,” he added.

Meanwhile, the NGO’s secretary, Mohd Hakim Mohd Nor, urged the UN to guarantee the safety of any humanitarian missions to Palestine as it has been proven how activists involved were not terrorists.

“So we are asking for safety assurance, a promise from the UN that any kind of help to be channeled to Palestine be allowed without any restrictions,” he said.

A Humanitarian Care Malaysia (MyCARE) spokesperson said that a source from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition which initiated the WBG campaign, had disclosed that the WBG members who were on board the ship Zaytouna-Olivia had been transferred from Givon Prison in Ramla to the holding centre at Ben-Gurion Airport in Israel.

The humanitarian ship was heading to Gaza when Israeli forces seized and herded it to Ashdod Port.
