Gerakan legal and human rights bureau chief Baljit Singh has apologised if anyone felt offended by his remarks about women earlier today.

"I never intended to lower or degrade any women and never had any such intentions. I am sorry if anyone felt offended," Baljit said in a Facebook post.

Baljit in his speech at the Gerakan annual general assembly today suggested that instead of fielding older men in elections, the party should nominate women who were "beautiful, sweet, energetic, (and) sexy" to boost its chances.

However, Baljit said his remarks was referring to Gerakan lifetime member Azmar Md Alias, who has been a party member since 1985.

"I candidly referred to Kak Azmar as a candidate who would be young, sexy and etc (in my speech).

"For those who do not know her - especially the reporter - she is a grandmother. I spoke to her earlier and she was okay with it," he said.

Baljit in his speech said the following:

"If you want a seat where you will 100 percent lose, why put a candidate who is 70 years old, a Chinese man who is 70 years old. Ok 80 years old.

"Why not field a woman who is beautiful, sweet, energetic, sexy, and is willing to give it her all like our Kak Azmar."

In his Facebook post, Baljit also said that he wanted Gerakan to field young candidates from all races, and also more women.

He added he bore no ill will against those who lashed out at him.

"For those who have spinal reflex to judge me without knowing the whole story I also have no ill feeling against them. I hope this explanation will clarify the misunderstanding."
