Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah has lodged a police report at the Petaling Jaya police district headquarters over alleged posting by red shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos warning of the return of the 'flying parang' of May 13 if the electoral reform group persist with the Bersih 5 rally.

The 'flying parang' stories referred to tales of magic infused parang which would fly around to behead the Chinese during the 1969 racially-tinged disturbance.

"I am lodging a police report against Jamal who is Sungai Besar Umno chief, who has issued a statement that seems seditious with intent to cause civil disturbance.

"Jamal has clearly said on his Facebook wall that he promised a repeat of the May 13 tragedy and the flying parang will return if Bersih scheduled for Nov 19 were to proceed.

"He is clearly threatening civil strife in the country and is asking his group to go to war. His statement also shows that he intends to wage war on the Agong as his intent is to provoke disturbance," Maria told reporters outside the police station today.

Maria said that she is confident that the police will act in accordance with the law and investigate the matter.

She said this is the eighth report lodged against Jamal over the matter with seven other reports made in Johor Baru, Kluang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuantan, Brickfields and Kelantan.

When told that Jamal had claimed that the Facebook post was not by him and was done by a third party, Maria said that either way, the police should investigate to get to the truth.

"Let police investigate, we do not really know who it was, if it is not him, then fine.

"We do not want racial politics, we want the country to prosper in peace. What we want is fair and peaceful elections," concluded Maria.

Put an end to Jamal's plans

Meanwhile, Gerakan Youth has urged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to put an end to Jamal's plans once and for all.

The wing's deputy chief Andy Yong (photo) said although Jamal and some Umno leaders have claimed the movement is not linked to Umno, the fact is that Jamal is the Sungai Besar Umno division chief.

"Surely, being the president of Umno, Najib can take action as Jamal is the Sungai Besar division chief.

"Not to mention the other Umno members who are clearly involved," he told Malaysiakini today.

Yong pointed out that Najib's 1Malaysia concept is about unity in diversity and inclusiveness as well as accepting and celebrating differences, not mere tolerance or respect.

"The PM also has been advocating moderation, which should be the way to move forward. He is the PM for all Malaysians," he added.

Though conceding that it is the right of any group to assemble and protest lawfully, Yong cited the violent acts the red shirts have perpetrated.

Yesterday, Yong led a Gerakan Youth delegation to lodge a police report on Jamal's Facebook post. 

He said while Jamal had claimed the post was from a fake account, the police must investigate whether or not it had actually come from him.

Apart from this, Yong also urged the police to take action on the fracas that took place recently, such as the ones in Teluk Intan, Sabak Bernam and Gurney Drive, where the red shirts confronted participants of the Bersih 5 convoy.
