Speculation is rife that Bersih supporter Kusaini Kassim, who was attacked by the red shirts in Sabak Bernam on Saturday, was actually a cop planted at the scene to provoke the latter group.

But both Kusaini and the police have denied this allegation.

"How could that be an act? I wanted to go home and had to take that road. It wasn't an act, it really happened,” Kusaini told Malaysiakini when contacted.

Kusaini, who was egged and kicked repeatedly in Saturday's incident, had expressed gratitude to the traffic officer who came to his rescue.

But netizens began accusing him of acting in order to provoke the red shirt supporters and court public sympathy, after a photograph of Kusaini wearing a police uniform (left) was widely spread online.

However, Kusaini denied that he was a police officer, saying that he had donned the uniform for fun at the time the photograph was taken.

"The photograph (of me wearing the police uniform) was taken after a friend asked me to wear his uniform and he asked me not to do anything with the photograph. I just wanted to show off," he said.

Meanwhile, the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters clarified in a Facebook post that Kusaini is a junior general assistant in a government agency.

"We will probe any party that spreads the matter as the act was deliberately done to tarnish the police's image," said Sabak Bernam OCPD Nor Azmi Isa in the post.
