Sodomy II conviction review decision on hold

The Federal Court concluded its hearing of the judicial review application by jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim over his Sodomy II conviction.

Chief Judge of Malaya Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin, who led the five-member bench, reserved delivery of the judgment, adjourning proceedings to a later date.

During the hearing, Anwar's lawyers argued that the affidavit by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s aide Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad, and the conduct of the appointed public prosecutor Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, supported the contention of a political conspiracy against Anwar.

Anwar's plight got a leg up from overseas as United States House of Representatives speaker Paul D Ryan tweeted for the PKR de facto chief's immediate release from prison, saying he is “a prisoner of conscience and should be freed”.

Dr M claims culinary sabotage

Dr Mahathir Mohamad accused Najib of attempting to unleash a gastronomical blow to weaken his will. After first withdrawing police escort for him, the former prime minister claimed there was now a plan to change his officer and cook as well.

In an exclusive interview with Malaysiakini, Mahathir said he believes that the majority of Malaysians view him in a good light, though he admitted that some may accuse him of wrongdoings. "But in the eyes of the majority, I think they appreciate what has happened to them," he said.

'Mechanic' Arul fixing 1MDB

1MDB president Arul Kanda Kandasamy compared himself to a mechanic trying to ‘fix’ a company, saying that the problems plaguing the state investment fund did not begin under his watch, but he is there to be part of the solution.

Several students at a the Department of Special Affairs-organised Universiti Malaya town hall event, where Arul explained this, however, told him: 'No spin, we want answers'.

A student group criticised the '1MDB and current affairs' town hall, calling it a "brainwashing" session aimed at twisting the facts about 1MDB and to confuse the students.

Meanwhile, DAP lawmaker Tony Pua took to Facebook to punch holes in Arul’s explanation to the students.
