US lawyer Kimberley Motley visited the Prime Minister's Department today to try to meet Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Motley, who arrived around 11.05am, only left the building in Putrajaya today after waiting for one hour.

However, she did not succeed in meeting the prime minister as she was told he has a busy schedule.

"We just talked to people over the phone. I don't even think he's here, from what I understand," she said.

She had written a letter requesting a meeting with Najib two days ago, she said, but she did not get a response.

"Obviously I'm disappointed but I understand that he has a tight schedule.

"So I don't want to disturb him but I hope in the next few weeks I will be able to meet him personally because it is very important that we explain what he needs to hear from us," she told reporters outside the Prime Minister's Department.

Motley was appointed as counsel to jailed de facto opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim to handle several of his ongoing cases, including the review of his second sodomy case in February 2015.

She said that she hoped she would be able to meet Najib before returning to Washington towards the end of the month.
 
"Obviously, Anwar's case is very important to Malaysia and the international community.
 
"So, I'm going to continue to insist on meeting with Najib on Anwar's case, which is very much a priority for us, to address some of the issues ‎involved with the case."
 
She also said she would try every legal avenues available to her to make things right for Anwar.
 
Motley, a graduate of Marquette Law School in 2003, has practiced law in the US and Afghanistan.
 
She has also helped trained hundreds of Afghan lawyers.
 
Anwar is currently serving a five-year jail term in Sungai Buloh Prison after he was convicted of sodomy in February last year.
 
He insists that the charge was trumped up and politically motivated.
