A cyber cafe assistant was sentenced to 10 months' jail by the Magistrate's Court in Kuala Lumpur today after he pleaded guilty to punching a homeless person with physical disabilities.

Magistrate Ahmad Solihin Abd Wahid ordered Liew Ken Lun, 39, to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest, which was last Oct 11.

Liew was charged with voluntarily causing hurt on Noor Azrul Abu Bakar, 41, in a Bas Go KL, near Pavilion, Jalan Bukit Bintang, at 1.50pm last Oct 8.

The charge, under Section 323 of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment for up to a year, of fine not exceeding RM2,000, or both, if found guilty.

According to the facts of the case, Noor Azrul was in the bus which had stopped in front of Pavillion when he criticised Liew for jumping queue to get into the bus.

This prompted Liew to punch Noor Azrul on the face and abdomen until the bus driver intervened and told Liew to get off the bus.

Deputy public prosecutor Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim, who prosecuted, requested a punishment to serve as a lesson to Liew, being that the victim was homeless and a person with disabilities.

Liew was unrepresented.
