A construction site located on the fifth floor of Penang’s iconic Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (Komtar) tower caught fire today, though firemen quickly brought the blaze under control with no casualties reported.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department, they received a call about the fire at 9.54am and first responders from the Lebuh Pantai Fire and Rescue Station arrived at 10.06am.

The nine-person crew including a supervisor, arrived with a ladder-equipped fire truck and a Pajero four-wheel-drive vehicle.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department’s incident report, the fire was at a commercial centre under construction on the fifth floor of the Komtar building, and the blaze affected the area between the floor to the roof structure of the commercial centre which is over 70 feet in height.

Fire and rescue personnel took about six minutes to put out the blaze which was under control at 10.12am.

Komtar was the tallest building in South-East Asia and is also the location of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s office.
