Pakatan Harapan will try to reach a consensus on Parti Amanah Negara's Private Member's Bill to strengthen syariah courts, said PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali.

"We have yet to see the details of the proposal. Certainly, the matter will be discussed among the parliamentarians in Pakatan," Azmin said at a press conference today.

"Hopefully, we will take a common position in this (Parliament) session on this matter," he said.

The Selangor menteri besar has no problem with Amanah taking a stand on the bill before consulting its allies in Pakatan.

"There are issues, sometimes, where a party will take a position and that position will be discussed in Pakatan Harapan.

"I think the process is very healthy, and we will discuss that in Pakatan," Azmin added.

Yesterday, Amanah revealed that it would table a Private Member’s Bill, which can serve as an alternative to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act or Act 355.

Amanah said it would only reveal the contents of the bill once it is tabled in the Dewan Rakyat. The bill has been submitted to the Parliament secretariat.

Azmin today also noted that Harapan and PKR have held lengthy discussions on Hadi's bill on Act 355.

"The president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will issue a statement (on our stand) which will be adopted by (Harapan) MPs in the upcoming debate," he said.

Hadi's bill is often dubbed the 'Hudud Bill', as amending the limits for penalties would allow the implementation of hudud in Kelantan and Terengganu.

Kelantan and Terengganu's state legislative assemblies have passed hudud enactments.

PAS defended the move as an attempt to strengthen syariah courts.

Amanah's partners PKR and DAP have said they will discuss the new bill. However, MCA said DAP should be up in arms over the matter.
