PAS Youth today condemned TV3 for allegedly "slandering" PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang by reporting him praising the goods and services tax during Dewan Rakyat sitting yesterday.

PAS Youth vice chief Khairul Nizam Khirudin said the broadcaster "manipulated" Hadi's statement and did not include portions of his speech where he added the GST caused inflation and suffering.

The report was broadcast on TV3's 8pm news bulletin segment, Buletin Utama.

"Isn't it clear as day that it is slanderous to broadcast news which slices up statements at the whim and fancy of the news outlet's owner?" he asked in a statement.

"We urge TV3 to repent from spreading lies and slander. TV3 must send all its reporters and editors to Bahasa Melayu lessons so they know to differentiate between questions and statements," he said.

Hadi, who is Marang MP, asked Finance Minister II Johari Abdul Ghani if the government had the intention to cancel the regressive GST and replace it with a tax mechanism that was more just and did not burden the people.

In a supplementary oral question, Hadi said while the GST is effective in reducing tax evasion, it also caused inflation.

He added rise in cost of living coupled with currency fluctuations, had burdened the people.

As such, he asked if the government had considered these side effects and if there were other alternatives.

To this, Johari said inflation has leveled off at two percent, after spiking to close to four percent soon after the implementation of the GST at six percent on April 1, 2015.

This showed that prices were stabilising and that the impact of GST was temporary, the minister said.

On Monday, Prime Minister and Finance Minister Najib Abdul Razak said the government would not slash GST rates to spur domestic consumption, as this would cripple the economy.
