Following the arrest of red-shirts leader Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos, an Umno MP wants Bersih 5 organisers to be likewise investigated under the Sedition Act.

Kuala Selangor MP Irmohizam Ibrahim claimed this is because it is “obvious” how the polls watchdog has been responsible in allegedly "inciting the rakyat to hate the government".

“We will see more incidents of a split among the rakyat and a violation of the country’s peace.

“Bersih 5 is just a medium for the opposition to play politics; on the outside it’s clean but the reality is that it leaves a dirty mark on the country’s peace and harmony," he said in a statement today.

Irmohizam claimed the past series of Bersih rallies have shown how organisers had allegedly failed to control participants.

This had led to threats against public safety, public amenities being destroyed and massive traffic jams due to the closure of roads, he claimed.

The Umno MP also claimed Bersih would pose as a potential target for terrorists.

“If this rally is continued, there’s a high possibility that it will attract the threat of terrorists who aim for public areas.

“It’s not impossible that terror groups such as Islamic State (IS) would take the opportunity (to make an attack)."

Following Jamal’s two-day remand yesterday, red-shirts secretariat member Armand Azha Abu Hanifah had urged for the arrests of Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah and her predecessor Ambiga Sreenevasan.

Bersih’s series of convoys that kick-started earlier this month saw scuffles between Bersih and red-shirts supporters.

Last week’s convoy in Kuala Selangor saw the provocation escalate as media practitioners were roughed up by anti-Bersih supporters.

The Bersih 5 rally is planned for Nov 19.

The rally calls for electoral reform and the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over the growing 1MDB scandal.
