Machete-wielding Islamic State supporter shot by police in Indonesia

A suspected supporter of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organisation was shot in Indonesia today, after he attacked police with a machete and suspected explosives, a police spokesperson said.

Three officers were injured in the attack in Tangerang, located on the outskirts of the capital Jakarta, police spokesperson Awi Setiyono said in Jakarta.

The man launched an attack during which he stabbed officers and threw two devices which appeared to be pipe bombs when police tried to prevent him from pasting a sticker with an IS symbol on a building. He was identified as 21-year-old Sultan Aziansyah.

Aziansyah received three bullet wounds to his legs after police opened fire, the spokesman said.

The man was unemployed and was born in Jakarta, spokesperson Boy Rafli Amar said.

Police seized a knife, a machete and an Islamic State sticker from the suspect, Boy Rafli said.
