The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has weighed into the matter of journalists being harassed while covering the Bersih convoy in Kuala Selangor on Oct 15.

In a statement today, the congress expressed support for the National Union of Journalists' (NUJ) Oct 18 police report over the matter, urging authorities to take speedy action and reminding all that journalists should be allowed to do their duty unhindered.

"It is understood that supporters of an anti-Bersih group, known as red-shirts have acted violently towards three reporters who were covering the convoy," said MTUC secretary-general N Gopal Kishnam in a statement.

In this matter, said MTUC, it should be the responsibility of police and the home ministry to investigate the case to ensure justice is served.

"The guilty party must be brought to justice so that the same thing will not recur. We all know that journalists do not support any parties, not even Bersih or the red-shirts."

MTUC notes that it is the responsibility of reporters to cover events, gatherings or activities organised by any party, and police should accord them fair protection for them to do their job.

Reiterating its support for NUJ in the matter, the congress further called upon the police and home ministry to look into the matter and ensure adequate protections are given to journalists on duty.

MTUC said that like all those entrusted with a solemn duty, journalists deserve the right to be able to perform their job without fear of threats or barriers.

On Oct 15, four journalists on duty were roughed up by the red-shirts, in two separate incidents, while covering the Bersih rally.

The NUJ has lodged a police report over the matter on Oct 18.
