In a surprise twist, red-shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos said the men who attacked a Bersih supporter in Sabak Bernam, and roughed up the media in Kuala Selangor, were actually from Bersih.

“I wish to state that the violence and provocation before this is by Bersih.

“The motorcyclist in yellow who was kicked from the back, (the attacker) was hired by Bersih, to wear the same T-shirt that we wear,” Jamal said, referring to his red T-shirt.

When asked about eggs thrown at Bersih supporters during the rally in Sabak Bernam, Jamal said that was out of his control and that he did not know “when the chicken laid the eggs”.

Asked about the aggression against journalists last week, Jamal said that was Bersih as well.

Speaking to the media after a counter-rally against the Bersih convoy in Kapar, Jamal said he would not be surprised if Bersih was suddenly “attacked” by red-shirt impersonators.

The red-shirts had gathered at a petrol station across from the Kapar PKR headquarters where Bersih ended their convoy.

Both groups dispersed at about 3.30pm peacefully and without incident.

Bersih responds

Responding to Jamal's allegations, Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah said they have never hired anyone to commit violence.

"We are not into paying anybody to do violence and we have never done that.

"There should not be wild accusations made," she told Malaysiakini when contacted.

Today's Bersih convoy started at around 12pm in Kuala Selangor.

Apparent disorganisation marred the convoy after it stopped several times without reason.

At one point after arriving in Kapar, the convoy was even told off by the police for stopping in the middle of a busy road.

The group then converged at a nearby roadside and the Bersih 5 rally torch was then handed over by the team from Kuala Selangor to their Kapar counterparts.

In a press conference at the Kapar PKR headquarters later, Kapar PKR branch information chief Mohd Zamsol Abd Majid hit out at the red-shirts for continuously disturbing Bersih supporters.

“This shows the profound effect Bersih has had, if not, why would they bother having a ceramah at the roadside,” he said, in reference to the red-shirts who were gathering some 300 metres away.

The red-shirts, he added, had always disturbed the convoys as they have a particular agenda in mind.

Disappointing convoy

Meanwhile, Bersih steering committee member Jay Jay Denis admitted that today’s convoy was a “disappointment”.

“Someone asked me what we were doing. Today’s biggest problem is that we were not able to mix with anyone from outside of our group.

“Maybe we think that we have achieved something but when we look back, was there an impact?” he said.

The series of convoys, he reminded, were aimed to inform the public on the upcoming Bersih 5 rally.

"I apologise for any problems today, I take full responsibility for it and we will make sure it won't happen again," he said.

Bersih’s series of convoys are part of an effort to whip up support for its upcoming rally scheduled to be held on Nov 19.
