The opposition walked out of Prime Minister Najib Razak's budget speech because they had enough of the latter's "potshots" and insults, said a DAP parliamentarian.

DAP Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong said they had sat through nearly two hours of the budget speech, at which point Najib blamed the opposition for claims that the country's economy was faring badly.

"He accused the opposition of sandiwara (play-acting), of falsely claiming that the economy is in stormy conditions, and he asked who are the traitors.

"Prior to that, Najib had taken potshots at opposition members in many earlier parts of the speech.

"Insulting the opposition to the television audience was his only game (during the budget speech).

"We decided enough is enough,” said Liew in his speech yesterday, sent to the media today.

The Kluang MP said the annual budget speech was meant to be addressed to the sitting MPs in the house, but claimed Najib had turned it into a television spectacle that was full of jokes and insults, but with little real solutions for the nation's ailing economy.

"The opposition was walking out on a prime minister who turned Malaysia into a global kleptocracy and also a finance minister whose budget speech had nothing inspirational to offer except cheap shots against the opposition," said Liew.

Earlier, Najib decried the walkout, accusing the opposition of not caring for the people's welfare, which he said was the content of his speech.

The current parliamentary session began in a controversial manner, after speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia barred questions regarding the 1MDB scandal and 'Malaysian Official 1'.

Malaysian Official 1 was mentioned in the US Department of Justice's forfeiture suits seeking to seize assets allegedly purchased with money stolen from from 1MDB.

Pandikar claimed raising the matter in Parliament would be "sub judice" to the court proceedings in the US.
