Malaysian Wendy Ng has clinched gold in the women's 3m springboard category during the Kuching leg of the FINA World Grand Prix yesterday, beating two favourites from China.

"I am delighted to finally win an individual title in the World GP.

"It will spur me to train harder and also give me the self-belief that I can take on the best divers in the world,” said Kuala Lumpur-born Ng as quoted by New Sunday Times.

Ng posted a five-dive total of 338.25 points to top the event, ahead of China’s silver medallist Wang Han (333.60) and bronze medallist Huang Xiaohui (322.30).

The 23 year-old became only the third Malaysian to win a gold medal in an individual event at the FINA grand prix.

Malaysia’s previous individual gold medallists were Pandelela Rinong in the women’s 10m platform at the Montreal leg in 2012, and Cheong Jun Hoong in the 3m springboard at the Singapore leg in 2014.

In the men’s 3m springboard synchro, Ooi Tze Liang-Chew Yiwei finished at the bottom with 394.71 points in an event that only had two pairs, with China’s Xie Siyi-Huang Bowen posted 415.20 total points.

The Kuching leg ends tomorrow with the men’s 10m platform and women’s 3m springboard synchro events.
