DAP's Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong says there is no point for the police to waste time investigating an Oct 1 report lodged against him on his presence at a Bersih event because he was never there.

"More importantly, it is a complete waste of time of police resources to investigate Bersih participants just to harass them.

"It is important to note that the investigators are from the Criminal Investigation Department, which is already short-handed, and I sincerely sympathise with them having to also investigate political cases, which shall not have been their brief in the first place," Liew said in a statement.

He called on the police to stop intimidating and harassing Bersih participants.

"This is the second time I received a call from to Johor Selatan police district headquarters to meet with me to record a statement on my alleged presence at a Bersih event at MPJBT Square," explained Liew.

He said that today's call came from one Inspector Adilah.

"I told her that I am in the midst of preparing a speech on the tragedy at Hospital Sultanah Aminah and if she really wants to meet me she would have to travel to Parliament to meet me," he said.

Liew related that he told her to inform her superior, especially the OCPD, that he was never present at the said event and the police could just verify this with the Special Branch's video of the event.

Electoral reform movement Bersih is planning another mega rally, dubbed Bersih 5, slated for Nov 19 in Kuala Lumpur, to once again pressure the government to institute electoral and institutional reforms.

It is currently holding a nationwide roadshow to explain the matter to the people and drum up support for the planned rally.

Bersih claimed it is being harassed by the Umno-linked red-shirts, though police have done admirably well in buffering conflicts between the two sides.

However, there have also been complaints that Bersih leaders and participants were being systematically harassed by the authorities.
