PAS information chief Nasruddin Hassan has criticised those who have gone overboard in either supporting or opposing party president Abdul Hadi Awang’s Private Member's Bill related to hudud.

Nasruddin noted that there had been a flurry of reactions after Hadi tabled his motion for the bill to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, or Act 355.

“Unfortunately this had been sullied by attitudes that are overboard and extreme, be it those who were overboard in supporting or those who were extreme in rejecting,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said such behaviour spoils harmony and defeats the noble intentions of the debate.

“Avoid from labelling each other as infidels among Muslims,” he said.

Nasruddin, who is also Temerloh MP, stressed that Hadi’s motion should be supported by Muslim MPs.

“PAS stresses that the efforts to amend Act 355 should, and is even compulsory, to be supported by MPs particularly those who are Muslims.

“The purpose of the amendment is to empower the Syariah courts to impose punishments that are in line with laws in Islam.”

He stressed that PAS is prepared to tirelessly explain the technicalities of achieving this.

He added that PAS practices matured politics and is prepared to engage anyone on the issue.

After PAS Kelantan's state enactment to implement hudud laws was unanimously passed by PAS and Umno representatives along with a single PKR assemblyperson, Hadi proposed the bill to remove federal obstacles to putting the law into practice.
