Police are investigating a mother who had purportedly chained her daughter to a pole for refusing to go to school.

Subang Jaya OCPD (Mohammad Azlin Sadari) in a statement posted on the Subang Jaya district police Facebook page said that the Subang Jaya district control centre (DCC) had yesterday received a call from a man informing them of an eight-year-old Indian girl with her leg chained.

“The DCC then instructed the motorcycle patrolling unit to go to Lagoon Perdana Apartment in Bandar Sunway.

“When they arrived, the girl was already surrounded by the public.”

Azlin said the child’s mother came down 10 minutes later and admitted that she had chained her daughter for always refusing to go to school.

“The child was chained as a form of punishment. Police then asked for the keys from the mother and released the child.”

Both the mother and child were then brought to the Subang Jaya district police headquarters for investigation purposes.

The Star quoted Azlin as saying that the woman had since been released.

Police are investigating the case under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for neglect and exposure of a child to physical injury.

Photos of the girl in question had gone viral on social media yesterday. The girl, clad in a school uniform, had her right leg chained to a pole with a water bottle seen lying nearby.

Many netizens condemned the act, questioning the girl’s parents for resorting to such measures.
