A teacher suspected of molesting at least nine students has been transferred to another school and placed under the observation of the District Education Office and the state Education Department.

Education Minister Mahdzir Khalid said the ministry will also work closely with the police to solve the case involving Tamil school students, in accordance with the law.

The move to transfer the teacher appears to be in line with the ministry's procedures as detailed by Mahdzir in a written parliamentary reply last Wednesday.

The procedure according to minister, is to transfer teachers suspected of molesting students to other school districts and place under observation of Education Department counsellors.

There will also be counseling for the affected students, followed by disciplinary action against the accused teachers once a court ruling has been made.

In May it was reported that a teacher at a Tamil primary school in Hulu Selangor had been acting inappropriately with girls studying there.

One of his alleged victims complained to the headmaster, who then informed the state Education Department.

Mahdzir was responding to a question from Teo Nie Ching (DAP-Kulai) on action taken against the teacher, as well as how many cases of educators being accused of molesting students have there been since 2010.

"Fifteen cases involving teachers and students (being molested) have been reported up to Oct 2010," he said.

Meanwhile Abdul Aziz Isa, the aide to Chong Chien Jen (DAP-Bandar Kuching), expressed outrage at the minister's reply.

"What sort of action is that? Is not molestation of underaged children a crime?

"Why have there been no arrests or charges filed? Why is he still working with children? Why is he not suspended whilst being investigated?

"Khalid is just sweeping the issue under the carpet and could well expose more students to sexual assault," Aziz warned, urging swift action to be taken.
