Bersih 2.0 Northern region secretariat member Lee Chung Lun was summoned to give a statement on the polls watchdog activities in Penang at the Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) district police headquarters (IPD) today.

PKR Machang Bubuk assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon, who accompanied him, was also asked to give a police statement.

Lee said an officer from IPD SPT called him yesterday and asked him to assist in a police investigation which involved Bersih's leafleting programme in Sunway Carnival Mall, Seberang Jaya on Oct 7.

"But the officer did not mention which sections are invoked," Lee said.

"For me, this is totally a waste of time and can be seen as an attempt to intimidate Bersih's supporters.

"After all, our rights to peaceful assembly and leafleting are protected under the law," Lee told the media.

Lee felt that the Bersih convoy had made an impact so far, otherwise it would not face so many reactions such as death threats, provocation from the red-shirts and obstruction from the police.

He said so in a press conference at 1.45pm before entering the IPD.

Other than Khai Loon, Bersih 2.0 Northern region chairperson Toh Kin Woon, Seberang Prai local councillor Ong Jing Cheng, Aliran committee members Hendry Loh and Andrew Ong were also present.

After his statement was recorded, Chung Lun said that the questions asked by investigation officer ASP Mohamad Hisham were mainly about the leafleting event in Sunway Carnival and a ceramah in Perda.

He completed the statement recording process at 2.40pm.

Earlier, during a press conference, Khai Loon advised the police to act professionally without fear and favour.

"Bersih's programmes are conducted in a peaceful and rational manner. You cannot come for Lee Chung Lun or the organiser simply because there are other quarters who try to instigate," Khai Loon said.

Toh pointed out that since Bersih's events were launched, they were various threats and intimidation by different groups.

"I don't know why, what Bersih is doing is allowed under the constitution.

"Every citizen should be allowed and given space to express themselves via different means and channels, including rallies, as long as it is peaceful," Toh said.

"But we witness there are people who totally ignore and go against such democratic principles," he added.

"If you do something wrong, just correct it. The problem now is corruption and unfair elections, the government should look into the issue and solve it, Bersih is not the root cause of the problem."
