Minister disagrees with new Muslim-only halal logo

Malaysia does not need a new halal logo to market Muslim products as the existing one, which is issued by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim) is internationally-recognised, says Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.

A new logo would also confuse consumers, he told reporters after closing an anti-drug programme by the National Anti-Drug Agency in Pasir Salak today.

He was commenting on a suggestion by Padang Besar Member of Parliament Zahidi Zainul Abidin for the government to introduce a new halal logo, specifically for products produced by Muslim small and medium entrepreneurs.

In another development, Tajuddin, who is also Pasir Salak Member of Parliament, suggested the government to review the approach on the enforcement and prevention of drug abuse.

The reason being that the current approach was seen as no longer relevant as the number of drug addicts continued to rise, he added.

All facilities and current technology should be used to educate the public on the dangers of drugs, he added.

He also hit out at some parents for not cooperating with the authorities to stop drug abuse, especially if their children themselves were involved in drug abuse.
