All hospitals and health clinics in Terengganu have been given two weeks to conduct safety checks, mainly involving electrical wiring to ensure they comply with the standards set.

Terengganu Health Department director Dr Mohammad Omar said the two-week period given from Oct 26 aimed to ensure that the safety level at all hospitals and health clinics was good.

"Of course, we conduct checks and maintenance regularly, but after the tragedy at Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor recently, a thorough inspection is needed to ensure everything is really in good order, especially if the buildings are old.

"Old buildings have been given priority in the inspection and will be upgraded, including the wiring, if necessary," he told reporters after launching the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital's (HSNZ) Open Day in Kuala Terengganu today.

He said all the buildings at HSNZ already had a certificate of approval from the Fire and Rescue Department and fire drills were held once a year at the hospital.

On another development, he said five of the 10 patients admitted to HSNZ in the balloons explosion incident on Oct 21 had been discharged and were receiving follow-up treatment as outpatients.

"Five more patients have been transferred to a normal ward and two of them have undergone skin transplant surgery.

"All the victims will recover, but it will take some time and the Health Department has also set up a welfare fund via the Welfare Bureau to give a little contribution to the employees who were injured in the incident," he said.
