The Attorney-General's Chambers is appealing the acquittal of former PKR leader Badrul Hisham Shaharin for his role in the Black 505 rally in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, after the 2013 general election.

The charge against Badrul, who is better known as Chegubard, was dismissed without his defence being called by the Sessions Court in Petaling Jaya last month.

Badrul, who leads the NGO Suara Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM), said he received the notice on Oct 26 that the Attorney-General's Chambers is appealing the verdict.

"These are all challenges which will, God willing, strengthen me and the SAMM family further, in our bid to push for change without compromising on principles," he said in a statement.

Badrul was charged under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act, which states that organisers of assemblies shall notify the police officer in charge of the district, where the assembly is to be held, 10 days before the event.

If found guilty, he can be fined no more than RM10,000.

Badrul, who was sacked from PKR in August, continues to criticise the PKR-led Selangor government over claims of poor governance.
