Bersih co-chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah today turned the tables on those accusing Bersih of allowing foreign intervention, by questioning the source of the RM2.6 billion donation to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Bersih is under fire for allegedly being a vehicle for foreign meddling in Malaysian elections, through receiving funds from the American billionaire George Soros' Open Society Foundation.

"Whether you are an NGO or a sdn bhd, for Bersih, we have been up front with our accounts.

"So all these allegations, you know they are nonsense...

"The RM2.6 billion that went into the PM's account, please let us know, (what) are the sources of the fund and where did you spend it?" she asked.

Maria reiterated that Bersih publishes its account, including the funding sources, and those interested can easily check.

She told reporters at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, after submitting a notice to police about the Bersih 5 on Nov 19, in compliance with the Peaceful Assembly Act.

The Act requires assembly organisers to notify police at least 10 days before the event.

Maria said the police had urged Bersih to ensure its rally steers clear of Jalan Raja and Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur.

Jalan Raja is next to the historical square, the site the electoral reform movement had chosen to gather for the Bersih 5 mega rally.

"Police did not say whether we can rally or not, but we will proceed as announced, gathering first at Dataran Maybank (on Jalan Bangsar), Masjid Negara and then head to Dataran Merdeka.

"But we will not enter the Dataran Merdeka field; we will only be near Dataran Merdeka.

"The ban is only on Dataran Merdeka and Jalan Raja so we will not enter these two areas. We will respect Kuala Lumpur City Hall's request," Maria told reporters.

Bersih earlier announced that rally-goers would gather at Dataran Maybank and Masjid Negara, from 10am, and that the rally would continue until 6pm.

Bersih deputy chairperson Shahrul Aman Mohd Razali also urged all Bersih 5 participants to give their full cooperation to the organisers.

"We want this to be a historic moment in the fight for clean and fair elections," Shahrul said.

Bersih 5 is to demand for clean elections, clean government, the empowerment of Sabah and Sarawak, the strengthening of democracy and the right to dissent.
