DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today asked the party to endorse his proposal that Penang DAP chairperson Chow Kon Yeow take over from him as Penang chief minister.

He said this in case BN succeeds in their attacks against him.

"We shall defend DAP and Penang from BN together as one team, one spirit and one party," he said at the party's 50th convention in Penang.

Lim is facing two corruption charges over his purchase of a bungalow in Jalan Pinhorn.

The case is up for second mention on Dec 6 at the Penang High Court.

Lim has previously said Chow would be the likeliest candidate to replace him should he be convicted of the two graft charges.

Meanwhile, Lim said despite recurring problems in Pakatan Harapan, DAP remains confident of the future of Penang led by the Harapan coalition.

Lim said BN has run out of political capital to attack the party.

It is now resorting to personal attacks and the politics of hatred, lies, fear and even money politics, he said.

Lim said he has become the latest victim of trumped-up charges of corruption by BN.

'No surrender'

The embattled chief minister thanked all members and supporters for believing in his "innocence and that my team and I are clean - we do not rob and steal from the people".

"Whether BN succeeds in its attacks against me, we can expect more to come," he said.

"We will stand together against BN. We will not bow, nor yield nor surrender.

"I have said it before and I say it again. I would rather die standing than live on bended knees," Lim said.

"But I will never forget the strong support and love from my brothers and sisters here. You are all my good comrades."

Lim said BN can continue to bully the party but it will not respond in kind.

He said DAP members will respond to criticisms rationally using truths and facts, with performance and delivery of a Penang that grows better, stronger, more free and prosperous every day for all.

"To prove that DAP is not just one individual but a team of collective leadership, Penang and the party will continue the struggle, whatever happens to me, " Lim said.

One of the sessions on the convention programme will honour the party's veterans and supporters who have "sustained the party when we were in the opposition".

"Your fierce idealism, unbending principles, unyielding courage and unquestioned loyalty allowed DAP to overcome persecution from an oppressive government machinery, endure bullying from media blackouts and resist sweet temptations from money politics," said Lim.
