Reds nabbed over trash; Saddiq's letter to sultan probed; Chow for Penang CM

KINI ROUNDUP Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Four arrested for dumping trash at M'kini office

Two women and two men were arrested for "insulting behaviour" after they dumped rubbish in front of Malaysiakini's office in Petaling Jaya last Saturday, following a red-shirt protest there hours earlier. They have been freed on police bail.

In a related matter, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said the youth wing was not involved in the red-shirts' protest against the news portal, despite Umno Youth exco member Armand Azha Abu Hanifah being a key figure at the rally.

The rally was against Malaysiakini, for allegedly being controlled by American billionaire George Soros, a claim refuted by the news portal.

Khairy also said funding from organisations linked to George Soros is different from the RM2.6 billion political donation Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak received from the Saudi royal family, as the donation came with no strings attached.

Meanhile, Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Ibrahim released a parody video of him shooting red-shirts doing a martial arts stunt, like the one that took place during the rally near the Malaysiakini premises last Saturday, but the prince stressed that he was not siding with anyone.

Police to probe Syed Saddiq on open letter to Johor sultan

Police will investigate Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman on his open letter to the Johor sultan, questioning the constitutionality of the sultan's decree banning street demonstrations in Johor.

Law experts have said that the Johor ruler’s decree is not binding.

Guan Eng urges DAP to endorse Chow Kon Yeow as next CM

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has urged delegates at the Penang DAP convention to endorse state party chief Chow Kon Yeow as next Penang chief minister, as Lim faces corruption charges over his bungalow purchase.

The DAP state convention also saw a delegate condemning the party's new co-operation with the opposition's former nemesis, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was referred to as a "snake" and a "pimp". The two words were later withdrawn by the delegate, upon Lim's urging.

Other Kinibites

Umno information chief Annuar Musa claimed DAP was planting proxies in other parties, so it could control the country via its "puppets" if the opposition won Putrajaya.

PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin said PAS will only co-operate with parties that support amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 and the position of Islam, Bernama reported.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak said the opposition was downplaying the success of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's visit to China, as it was worried of the trip's impact in swaying fence-sitting voters to BN.

Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem condemned the federal govermment’s plan to convert two teachers colleges in Sarawak into vocational colleges as "stupid".
