Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang has responded to Marina Mahathir, who defended American billionaire George Soros.

In a series of tweets, Tan said it appeared that those who are pro-opposition are now also pro-Soros.

"Soros' OSF (Open Society Foundations) gives RM3 million per year. That's how cheap they are. They ignored what he did in 1998.

"It only costs Soros RM3 million per year to erase pro-opposition people's memories on what he did in 1998 against our ringgit. Smart person," he added.

Tan also questioned how old Marina was when the "human rights champion" attacked the ringgit.

During the crisis then, Marina's father Dr Mahathir Mohamad was prime minister and had blamed the billionaire for the nation's financial woes.

In 2006, Mahathir met with Soros and cleared the billionaire of earlier accusations that he was responsible for the 1997 Asian financial crisis.

Mahathir last week said he was more focused on his mission against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak compared to the news of Soros having funded groups like Bersih.

Bersih is holding a rally on Nov 19, which among others, calls for Najib's resignation amid the 1MDB issue.

The prime minister has denied abusing public funds for personal gain and has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the attorney-general.

In an earlier tweet, Tan also noted how US presidential candidate Donald Trump said that he would not accept the election result if he does not win.

This prompted the Gerakan Youth leader to wonder if the Republican candidate would embark on a "Bersih" in the US.

Tagging both Trump and his contender Hillary Clinton, Tan said: "Will Trump do a 'Bersih' in US? p/s: Bersih is a street demo when someone is unable to accept defeat."

Speaking at a Bersih rally in Kedah last night, Marina is reported to have said she met Soros 10 years ago, when he was in Kuala Lumpur.

She told the audience that she got to know then that Soros was a generous philanthropist.

She said Soros contributed significantly to help war-torn Bosnia and was someone who believed strongly in human rights.

The police are probing the organisations that had received funding from Soros, including Malaysiakini, whose founders have denied accusations of attempting to topple the government.
