Will DOJ still pursue 1MDB kleptocracy case under Trump?

YOURSAY | ‘Policies can be changed by whoever who heads the DOJ.’

BBC: Trump described golf buddy Najib as his 'favourite PM'

Trueglitter: PM Najib Razak understands neither the meaning of shame nor indignity when he is consistently showcasing his self-importance with photos taken with some foreign leaders with the view of distancing himself from the many scandals committed by him.

The fact that Najib has consistently boasted his playing golf with US president Barack Obama a couple of years ago and the prominent display of a signed photo of newly elected US president, Donald Trump, in his office confirms the truth of his intention.

Najib should be reminded that it is all well and easy to try conceal or deflect the allegations of his involvement in the 1MDB scandal and for being the true identity of the infamous ‘MO1’ (Malaysian Official 1), but no amount or intensity of his rebuttals will ever allay the verdict of his guilt.

Najib's blatant disregard and continuous acts of defiance in face of the growing tide of discontent and frustration from the unforgiving populace has condemned him to suffer the certainty of an early political demise.

SRMan: So, Najib is Trump’s favourite PM? In all possibility, Trump must have inscribed those words on the photo before the RM2.6 billion scandal exploded.

Now that the MO1 has been described in certain quarters as the biggest kleptocrat in the world, I believe the new US president would not even dare to touch this once 'favourite PM' with a 10-foot pole.

Freethinker: Yes, you were friends when Trump was a businessman. But now that he is the US president, you should tread carefully.

Trump has all the money he needs. This man can't be brought. If I were you, I'll be very worry about the US Department of Justice (DOJ) case.

Hbasill: Indeed, the Trump who inscribed the photograph was the businessman Trump, and I believe he would have done the same for all heads of government around the world because that was his style of baiting them to allow him to exploit business opportunities.

Today he is the president-elect and the song he now sings could mean political death to corrupt leaders. So Najib, beware of what is to come.

Cocomomo: Hopefully, Trump will be more effective as president compared to Barack Obama, who talked eloquently but with little substance to show.

Hopefully, Malaysians also have the courage to vote for real change instead of continuing with a corrupted decaying system.

It’s time to have a corruption-free system with no racism or religious bigotry, a system that works for all Malaysians.

Rick Teo: Clearly, that buddy thing was before Najib was named as MO1. No one, especially a US president would want to call a kleptocrat his friend.

The US attorney-general and the judiciary does not work like in Malaysia, where the executive has influence over the two branches of the law.

When the DOJ civil forfeiture takes place, all the dirt will be exposed and there will not be any more cover-up.

Legit: Trump has said many times that as a businessman he has to be nice to everyone. Now President Trump will be different.

The government institutions in the US are largely free and independent, and they carry out their duties without fear or favour and without much interference from the executive.

The DOJ is not going to close the case just because there is a new president.

Worldly Wise: Trump said he will prosecute rival presidential candidate Hillary Clinton herself. MO1 should not have too much hope that he would be left off the hook.

In the US, there are many independent agencies. The president will not dare to interfere in any one of such agencies. They will simply not allow him to do so.

Thickskin: It is pathetic the way MO1 cronies are clutching at straws to try and insinuate that MO1 will be shielded from DOJ investigations and charges just because he is a golfing buddy of Trump.

Remember that unlike Malaysia, the US is a real democracy and the DOJ is not beholden to the president.

They can indict the president and bring him down, and they have done it before (for example, Richard Nixon).

Determined Sarawakian: Policies can be changed by whoever who heads the DOJ. And Trump is going to get a new AG at the Justice Department. Goodbye, Loretta Lynch.

Allforit: Wait till Tony Fernandez become PM of Malaysia. I hope he will remember me since he had autographed my red cap.

To be credible, Najib should go for another round of golf with the businessman-turn-president. Sorry, but it’s going to be more difficult to book a tee-off with Trump now.

Meet the new first family - likely major figures in Trump presidency

Not Convinced: For those pro-Trump Malaysians, be careful what you wish for.

One of Trump key advisers is Jared Kushner, who is married to the president-elect daughter, Ivanka. An orthodox Jew, Jared is son of wealthy real estate mogul Charles Kushner (who was convicted of tax evasion) and publisher of the weekly magazine, the New York Observer.

Jared and his family are known to be ardent supporters of Zionism, which partly explains why Trump is anti-Muslim.

Fair&Just: Wow, US even has a nepotism law. No wonder the DOJ is taking action against 1MDB’s illegally bought assets in the US.

Fair Play: Who knows, perhaps future US political and economic policies would be just as colourful.
