An Umno Youth leader has urged authorities to crack down on both the Bersih 'yellow shirts' and Umno-linked 'red-shirts' ahead of their expected face-off during the Bersih 5 rally this Saturday.

Cheras Umno Youth chief Johari Yazid said police from all around the country should be stationed around Kuala Lumpur from this Friday onwards, until peace has been restored.

"The people are sick and tired of actions by the 'yellows' and 'reds' that have no clear objective.

"Do not allow actions by these quarters to disrupt our nation's harmony," he stressed.

Johari in a statement also said that he is one of many Malaysians who disagreed with the actions of both parties.

"The 'yellows' with their ego to challenge national security while the 'red-shirts' boldly declared their desire to be the country's unofficial police force.

"Both these actions are seen to be based only on their lust (to demonstrate)," said Johari.

He further said that there is no need for the red-shirts to "take over" duties of the police because their actions so far have only made the situation worse.

Despite noting that there are legal provisions for peaceful assemblies, Johari pointed out that the guidelines for such assemblies were still unclear.

"We take for example in Indonesia where rallies will disperse after 5pm or failing which the government could take action.

"But not in Malaysia where organisers are seen to be free to do anything, including destroying public properties, excessive provocation and even stay in an area for two or three days," he claimed in reference to alleged incidents during the Bersih 4 rally last year.

Electoral reform coalition Bersih has pledged that its rally this Saturday would go on despite persistent threats from the red-shirts.

Red-shirts leader Umno Sungai Besar chief Jamal Md Yunos had similarly vowed that his supporters would only back down if Bersih agreed to call off its rally.
