If investigations reveal that red-shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos filed a false report, then action will be taken against him, said inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.

"I have issued a warning before that police would not tolerate those who file reports for political mileage and burden us.

"We are investigating the incident, if it is found that Jamal deliberately pinned the blame on others, then he would face action," he told Malaysiakini.

Khalid was commenting on the incident over the weekend, where Jamal sustained injuries to his nose when a scuffle erupted as police prevented the red-shirts from trailing PKR activists in Kuala Lumpur.

Initially, the Sungai Besar Umno chief shouted "polis tumbuk saya" (police punched me), but later told reporters it was a person linked to PKR lawmaker Zuraida Kamaruddin who assaulted him.

However, in his police report, Jamal claimed an individual wearing a Bersih T-shirt had punched him in the face and nose.

Meanwhile, quizzed on the video of the incident which appeared to show a police officer’s fist making contact with Jamal’s face, Khalid said the matter is being investigated.

"We have to ascertain if the action was deliberate or accidental since such incidents can occur when the situation is chaotic.

"We must also assess if there was provocation, or if reasonable force had to be employed by the police to control the situation.

"First and foremost, let us investigate to determine what actually happened," he added.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini published a frame-by-frame breakdown of the video in slow motion to shed light on the incident.
