PM concerned about possible clashes

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said he did not want to see clashes during the Bersih 5 rally and the red shirts counter-rally on Nov 19.

Lawyers for Liberty said police can use existing law to force organisers of the counter-rally to hold it at another time or place.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar questioned protesters asking for police protection but are unwilling to obey the law themselves.
 

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli asked Khalid to think about his men in blue as they too will be in harms way of the Bersih and red shirts' clash.

Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed warned Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos, who lead the red shirts, not to taunt police after the latter announced a reward to red shirts protesters who get detained by police.

Umno mobilising for red shirts rally?

Umno secretary-general instructed Malacca Umno to retract its instruction for all branches to deploy members for the red shirts counter-rally on Nov 19.

Meanwhile, Selangor Umno refused to confirm if it too was mobilising for the red shirts but its information chief Zein Isma said he will be participating in his personal capacity.

An attempt by traders to stop the Bersih 5 and red shirts rally at the Kuala Lumpur High Court was dismissed.

Chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa said civil servants found to be participating in the rallies could be sacked.

Monash University apologised for warning its students against joining what it described as "illegal rallies", stating that ti was only a reminder.

Higher Education Minister Idris Jusoh said he was unaware of the circular warning against joining the Nov 19 rally, which was also issued by several other universities.

KiniTV in court over video on AG

KiniTV and its directors Steven Gan and Premesh Chandran, who are also Malaysiakini editor-in-chief and chief executive officer respectively, will be charged over a video of a former Umno leader criticising attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali.

Khairuddin Abu Hassan, who is the Umno leader in the video, revealed that he was also being investigated under the Sedition Act for the press conference and questioned if Apandi was beyond criticism.
