Three Pakatan Harapan lawmakers and three activists who were arrested during and after the Bersih 5 rally were released today.

"Leaving Dang Wangi police station," tweeted Batu MP Tian Chua, along with a photo of himself and five others.

They included Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin, Pasir Pinji assemblyperson Howard Lee, Bersih steering committee member Hishamuddin Rais, artist Fahmi Reza and student activist  Luqman Hakim Mohd Fazli.

Umno Youth exco member Armand Azha Hanifah, who was arrested last Saturday, when he was part of the red-shirts rally, was also released from the Dang Wangi district police headquarters today.

Upon their release, the pro-Bersih six were heard shouting "Free Maria" outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters at about 12pm.

Their lawyer Rajsurian Pillai said the six of were probed under Section 145 and 511 of the Penal Code, for attempting to riot.

"They was released under police bail. They will be called back if needed," he said.

He said that Tian Chua and Luqman Hakim were held overnight at Jinjang lock up while Hishamuddin Rais, Fahmi Reza, Howard Lee and Armand were locked up in a same cell at Dang Wangi.

As for Zuraida, she was held at Jinjang women's lock up.

Shared cell with a red-shirt

Hishamuddin said that although he was locked up in the same cell with Armand, who led the red-shirts counter rally on Saturday, there was no conflict.

He said he had tried to convince Armand that Bersih's struggle was just and believed that he succeeded.

"We were held together two nights but we did not quarrel," he said.

Meanwhile, Fahmi questioned why the police arrested him since he was not the organizer nor did he wear a yellow shirt during the Bersih 5 rally.

He said the police claimed that the "clown" poster he held during the rally was tantamount to rioting.

"Who would have known that a piece of art or a graphic designer would be a threat to the government?

"Why should I be the one who is arrested? Why should I be punished for making art?" he asked.

Zuraida told reporters that there was a closed-circuit television (CCTV) installed inside the female lock up and this made her feel uncomfortable.

"Surely there will be males monitoring the CCTV. Even detainees deserve privacy," she said.

'Reds were peaceful'

After the six left, Armand walked out of the police station at about 12.40pm.

He commended the red-shirts for successfully holding a peaceful rally.

"We have successfully proved that the red-shirts are peace-loving. People think that we are racist but the rally on Saturday have proved naysayers wrong.

"People from different races joined our rally and we were very peaceful from the morning until the end. There was no provocation," said Armand.

Asked if any Umno members joined the red-shirts counter rally, Armand said he was uncertain.

"I did not bring a calculator on the rally day, so I do not knows how many Umno members were involved and I do not need to answer this question," he said.

He confirmed that he had a cordial chat with Hishamuddin when they shared the same cell.

Yesterday, police have released five politicians and three activists who were picked up before the Bersih 5 rally.
