PARLIAMENT Everything and anything can be made a tourist attraction, even graveyards, said Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz.

Nazri said 'scary tourism' capitalising on haunted spots was a popular attraction.

“There's nothing in this country that can't be linked to tourism. Crocodiles can be a tourist attraction, and so can haunted buildings,” the Padang Rengas MP told the House today.

Nazri cited the Jack the Ripper tour in England - in which tourists visit the locations where the murderer's victims were found - as an example of a popular scary tourism attraction.

One spot in Malaysia that can be made a haunted attraction is the Kwong Tong Chinese cemetery in Sungai Besi, he said.

“Some of the grave stones date back to 1901, that's one spot (we can turn into a tourist destination).

“But it has to be a scary place. It's in the middle of the city, so let's not make it a location for walks or jogs, or else even the ghosts will run away,” he said in jest.

Nazri said this while winding up his ministry's part in Budget 2017 committee stage debate.
