Up to 60,000 people are Uber and Grabcar drivers

PARLIAMENT An estimated 50,000 to 60,000 people are believed to have registered through the e-hailing applications as Uber and Grabcar drivers in the country, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Wee Ka Siong said only 20 percent of these drivers were active while the rest were part-timers who had permanent jobs.

“Most of the drivers providing the Uber and Grabcar services are concentrated in the urban areas such as the Klang Valley and Penang,” he said when replying to a question from Ahmad Fauzi Zahari (BN-Setiawangsa).

Wee said a bill to regulate ride-hailing services would be tabled in Parliament in March next year.
