Four Universiti Malaya (UM) students will face disciplinary hearings for participating in the TangkapMO1 rally in August, which demanded for the arrest of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over his role in the 1MDB controversy.

According to Anis Syafiqah Md Yusof, the spokesperson for the rally organisers, she, together with Mohamad Luqman Nul Haqim, Muhammad Luqman Hakim Fazli and Suhail Wan Azahar received letters informing them of the matter today.

The letter by the UM student affairs department, which was uploaded to Anis Syafiqah's Facebook page, accused her of breaching the university's code of conduct by organising the rally, causing public disturbance, as well as sullying the university's name.

UM's letter states that if Anis Syafiqah is found guilty, she may receive a warning, a fine, face suspension or may even be expelled.

A week ago, the four received letters from the university demanding that they show cause over the same matter.

Previously, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia student Asheeq Ali was suspended by his university after he was found guilty of contravening the university's code of conduct by attending the TangkapMO1 rally.

According to Anis Syafiqah, four other UM students - Ho Chi Yang, Hun Ti, Li Yang dan Jia You - also received letters informing them that they too face disciplinary hearing, for holding placards during a speaking event at UM featuring the 1MDB CEO Arul Kanda Kandasamay.

Anis Syafiqah added that the university did not provide adequate notice as the hearing date, Nov 30, was just over a week away.

"The charges leveled (against us was not) accordance with Article 10 of the constitution (which safeguards) the right to freedom of expression, assembly and association," she added.
