PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan's threat to withhold the party's support for law changes to stop unilateral conversion of children, is unacceptable, said DAP's Seputeh MP Teresa Kok.

Takiyuddin said this is if non-Muslims MPs keep interfering with PAS' proposed amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdictions) Act (Act 355).

"The warning... is totally shocking, extreme, unacceptable and irresponsible," Kok said in a statement.

She said the statement showed PAS still does not understand why non-Muslim MPs are questioning the constitutionality of the private member's bill by PAS president and Marang MP Abdul Hadi Awang.

She said in his speech at the Terengganu State Assembly in 2002, Hadi stated that the syariah penalties of hudud and qisas enacted in Terengganu would also be imposed in the state "when every citizen understands them".

"Takiyuddin should understand and accept the fact that non Muslims have every right as citizens of this country to be concerned about and opposed to Hadi’s private member’s bill," she said.

Takiyuddin was earlier referring to proposed amendments to the Law Reform (Marriage and Divorce) Act table by the government.

Among others, the bill proposed changes which would require both parents to consent to the conversion of a child to Islam, in the event that a parent converts to Islam.

The Muslim Lawyers' Association argued that the bill is unconstitutional as the Federal Court in the R Subashini vs T Saravanan case interpreted Article 12(4) of the Federal Constitution to mean either father, mother or guardian can determining the religion of the child below 18 years old.

Hadi introduced a motion to seek leave for his bill to be tabled in the recently-concluded Dewan Rakyat session, but deferred explanation of his motion to the next session, in 2017.

DAP, MIC, MCA and Gerakan have stressed their opposition to the bill, and urged a parliamentary select committee (PSC) to first review the details.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who gave a briefing on the bill to Muslim MPs, said he will propose the PSC to the prime minister.

Meanwhile, PAS' Kuala Nerus MP Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali commended SPDP president and Bintulu MP Tiong King Sing for his "rational stand" on the matter.

Tiong reportedly said there is no need for non-Muslims to interfere as the matter only concerns Muslims.

"Non-Muslims should not oppose the bill because it only affects the rights of Muslims under the syariah court, which jurisdiction is only on Muslims.

"I hope more non-Muslim political leaders will take this rational stance in respecting the rights of Muslims to practice their religion, as provided by the constitution," he said.
