Parti Amanah Negara vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa only has harsh words for the Umno AGM that concluded in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, saying he bids the party goodbye as it can no longer unite Malaysians.

“Najib failed to convince Umno, which is too racist to understand the need to be more progressive and inclusive. It is unfortunate that Najib bowed to the pressures of the racist Umno members and failed to uphold the aspirations of Bangsa Malaysia,” Mujahid said.

“He merely became the saviour of the Umno Malay racists,” he told Malaysiakini.

Contrary to Mujahid's view, Umno president and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said the AGM was his “best ever” in his 40 years in politics.

However, Mujahid (photo) said Umno at its AGM has destroyed the very fabrics that can build a Bangsa Malaysia and unite Malaysians.

He said the empty rhetorics of the Umno leaders at their just-concluded AGM proved his pessimistic view of Najib’s leadership.

"Whatever I doubted has become a reality,” he added.

“Umno is plagued by corruption, racism and radicalism. It no longer has any moral strength, its leaders are bankrupt of ideas and morals to lead Malaysia.

“Goodbye, Umno,” Mujahid quipped.

Throughout the AGM, the delegates were told that the impending 14th general election would be a contest between Umno and DAP.

DAP once again became to bogeyman, with the party being condemned by Umno leaders for being “anti-Malay and anti-Islam”.

The Malay community was also warned of the “nightmares” they would suffer if Umno loses power in GE14, which should be called by July 2018.

Pessimistic of a united Malaysia

Mujahid said he had always been pessimistic of a united Malaysia or 1Malaysia since Prime Minister Najib became Umno president and BN chairperson in 2009.

He said Najib wanted to be known as a leader who unites Malaysia while national unity is being threatened by racists and religious dogmatics.

However, Najib rose to become Umno president when the Scorpene submarine scandal, allegedly involving financial kickbacks by a Paris-based shipbuilder to Malaysian officials, was on trial in France, said Mujahid.

At the time when Najib became prime minister, news about the death of Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu, who was killed with military explosives by two former bodyguards of Najib, shocked the world, he added.

At the Umno AGM on Sunday, Najib again denied involvement in the Altantuya murder, saying his wife Rosmah Mansor would have done something about it if he knew the Mongolian woman.

Mujahid said it does not help that Rosmah is often criticised for her perceived lavish spending and lifestyle.

“And yet, Najib is deemed a saviour to Umno. This is madness,” he said.

Mujahid recalled that Najib introduced the National Unity Blueprint, which showed he was somewhat serious in improving national unity in the country.

National Unity Blueprint

Najib also took pride in forming the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) in November 2013, where the 'end product' is supposed to be the National Unity Blueprint, Mujahid said.

Part of the blueprint was to abolish the 1948 Sedition Act and replace it with the National Harmony Act, he said.

“I was appointed a member of the NUCC and was given responsibility in the law and policy committee, in which we were tasked with, among others, to draft the National Harmony Act.

“However, before the result of the NUCC was announced, Najib was pressured by Umno members, who have become more aggressive, to reject the idea of national unity while the Sedition Act is maintained,” Mujahid added.

He said some Malays have rejected Umno because the party is mired in allegations of corruption and its leaders have endorsed the financial discrepancies in 1MDB and the RM2.6 billion in Najib’s private bank accounts.

Mujahid said the Malay race has been condemned because of Umno, and some of them no longer wanted to be associated with Najib or his minions.

Ashamed with Umno, he said, they went on to form Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia or Bersatu, whose chairperson is former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“Some Malays also reject Umno because of its narrow racial views and its support for racist acts.

“We are fed-up with the actions of human beings like Jamal (Baju Merah) Mohd Yunos, Tajudin Rahman and others who are so-called ‘very Malay’,” he said.

Mujahid said the Malays have had enough of Umno’s dogmatic attitude, its breeding of religious radicalism by playing with amendments to the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965 and its project of hate for DAP and the Malay liberals.

Najib has stressed that the proposed amendment bill 'is not hudud' and would only be applied to Muslims.
