Lawyer Kamal Hisham Jaafar, who is facing several criminal breach of trusts and Companies Act charges at the Johor Bahru Sessions Court, is seeking to transfer his criminal cases to Kuala Lumpur.

Following this, the Kuala Lumpur High Court today fixed Dec 29, to hear the application.

The matter came up for case management before Justice Abdul Karim Abdul Rahman.

His lawyer Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz told this to Malaysiakini when contacted today.

“Kamal Hisham would be represented by a team of four lawyers comprising Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman, Shahruddin Ali, Syed Azimal Syed Abu Bakar and I,” he said.

Khairul Azam said they would also apply for a stay of proceedings of the Johor Bahru cases pending the outcome of this application.

The application was made to ensure Kamal Hisham got a fair hearing.

Kamal Hisham who was previously linked to the late Johor sultan Sultan Mahmud Iskandar, had claimed that he could not remain in the country for fear of danger to his life from the present Sultan.

He left Malaysia in April 2011, and took up residence in Dubai.

He came down to Singapore last year, only to be arrested by Singapore authorities who handed him to their Malaysian counterpart.

It was reported earlier this year that the Court of Appeal had rejected his appeal for bail after it agreed on a preliminary objection by the prosecution that the application was not appealable as it did not constitute a final decision.

It was reported that the Johor Bahru Sessions Court had granted him bail of RM700,000 in two sureties, and ordered that he surrender his passport and report to a police station every month.

After bail was granted, he was re-arrested. The High Court in Johor Bahru, in exercising its revisionary powers, revoked bail on Sept 21 last year.

He is still in prison, awaiting his trial.
