Yet another Umno Youth leader has urged former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to apologise to all Muslims for his remarks at the DAP National Convention on Sunday that allegedly made fun of the Prophet Muhammad.

Kedah Umno Youth chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin claimed in a statement today that Mahathir’s remarks could also be tantamount to committing ‘syirik’ - the sin of idolatry.

“Dr Mahathir should not only apologise to all Muslims for this insolence, but also recite his ‘istighfar’ in addition to the ‘shahadah’, because there might have been idolatry,” Shaiful Hazizy said.

‘Istighfar’ refers to the recitation to seek forgiveness from God, while ‘shahadah’ is the proclamation of the Muslims’ faith in the oneness of God and Muhammad as His messenger.

Shaiful Hazizy also claimed that the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairperson had previously insulted hudud and made fun of the prophet’s beard.

“In this context, the Kedah Umno Youth is in agreement with the Pahang Umno Youth that Dr Mahathir’s daringness to repeatedly use the prophet’s name and to insult him in a political venue is not only insolent, but touches on the sensitivities of Muslims.

“It’s clear that, for the sake of revenge and anger, after all his previous methods had failed to topple the legitimate BN government under Najib's leadership, Dr Mahathir is now willing to 'drag and sell' the name of the Prophet to justify his ceramah,” Shaiful Hazizy claimed.

Mahathir had, during a press conference held on the sidelines of the convention, said the prophet “never had RM2.6 billion in his account and 1MDB” - in an apparent response to prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s who in his opening speech at the Umno annual general assembly.

Najib had said then that he was following the example set by Prophet Muhammad by turning the other cheek against those who attacked him.

Yesterday, Pahang Umno Youth chief Mohd Shahar Abdullah condemned Mahathir for linking Prophet Muhammad to controversies surrounding troubled state-investor 1MDB and the RM2.6 billion donation.
