Mothers Against Pornography, a campaign led by Muslim NGO Wanita Ikram, has voiced support for the implementation of sex education in schools.

The topic was discussed at the 2016 Umno general assembly.

Sex education should be implemented as early as pre-school, said movement secretariat member Mohd Fadhli Othman and physical education teacher Nurul Zaikah Ahmad Tajuddin.

"Reproductive and Social Health Education (Peers) should be taught clearly and transparently.

"Terms used should be easy to understand for students from pre-school to secondary school," said the group in a statement today.

Sex education can also prevent sexual misconduct among youths, said the group, as young people will find ways to satify their curiosity if they were not educated properly.

The topic was also impossible to avoid due to easy access to technology, they said.

Use proper terms

They said lessons should be taught professionally using proper terms for genitalia instead of referring to them as "burung" (bird) or "angry bird", for example.

"Teachers must explain with wisdom, without feeling like they need to hide things," they said.

"This subject requires proper mental and physical preparation. Not just for the students, but teachers must be mentally and physically proficient too.

"Teachers must provide information that is correct and explanations that are concise," they said.

At the Umno general assembly last week, Puteri Umno member Norrulhuda Marsidin said sex education has not been taken seriously and the subject should be re-evaluated to raise awareness among students.

Sex education is taught in schools through Peers since 2006. Peers replaced the "Family health education" module which was taught from 1989 to 2002 and "Sexuality Education" from 2003 to 2005.

The lessons were part of the physical education curriculum.
