Group accuses ex-PM of insulting the prophet and Muslims, demands that he faces action.

A police report has been filed against Dr Mahathir Mohamad over his remark regarding Prophet Muhammad during the DAP national convention.

The report was lodged by Pertubuhan Nadi Rakyat Malaysia president Mohamad Rafi Awg Kechik with the Dang Wangi district police headquarters this afternoon.

Rafi alleged that Mahathir had violated Section 298 or 298A of the Penal Code and the Sedition Act 1948.

Section 298 concerns the deliberate uttering of words to wound religious feelings, while Section 298A relates to causing disharmony, disunity or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will on grounds of religion.

Mohamad Rafi alleged that Mahathir's remark was aimed at causing confusion and creating unhappiness among Muslims and Malaysians.

"This is because he is trying to compare the appointment of a normal human being chosen by the people with Allah's will to the prophet," he told Malaysiakini.

Insult to Muslims

Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi told the party general assembly last Wednesday that Najib Abdul Razak was the party president because it was "God's will".

In his speech at the Umno meet, Najib said while some urged him to be as harsh as his critics, he however chose to adhere to the teachings of the prophet, who emphasised on the need to be civil even with foes.

At the DAP convention on Sunday, Mahathir said there were remarks made during the Umno general assembly which likened Najib to the prophet.

"But the prophet of Islam doesn't have RM2.6 billion in his accounts and 1MDB," he had added.

Mohamad Rafi claimed that Mahathir effectively insulted the prophet and Muslims with the remark.

He added that although Mahathir had contributed enormously to the country and was considered a statesman, he must not be allowed to get away with breaking the law.

Yesterday, Rizal Mansor, who is an aide to the prime minister’s wife Rosmah Mansor, also criticised Mahathir over his remark.

He claimed the former premier was attempting to outshine DAP to the point of being willing to belittle the prophet.

However, Mahathir's lawyer, Mohd Haniff Khathri Abdulla, denied that the former premier's remarks insulted the prophet, and accused Rizal of slander.
