Five Umno leaders have been sworn in as senators, including Umno Youth vice chief Khairul Azwan Harun.

The four others are Malaca Umno chief Rabiyah Ali, Kelantan Umno secretary Hanafi Mamat, Seputeh Umno chief Mustapa Kamal Mohd Yusoff, Umno Puteri assistant secretary Fahariyah Md Nordin and Johor Umno education cluster chairperson Rahemah Idris.

They took their oath in the Dewan Negara this morning. Their term will last for three years.

Speaking to reporters later, Khairul Azwan said he is willing to work with NGOs and opposition leaders.

"It must begin at the youth level. I work with (Umno Youth chief) Khairy Jamaluddin and other youth leader from MCA, MIC and NGOs.

"I also want to see leaders from other opposition parties sit together to formulate a plan for a better future using the right narrative.

"The time is right for the PM to announce Transformasi Nasional (TN50), for the next 35 years to come," he said.

Azwan caught the limelight when he lodged a police report against former Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, then Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Abu Kassim Mohamed and former attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail, accusing them of conspiring against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

He accused the trio of providing confidential documents to foreign agencies, including the US Federal Bureau of Invstigation, in relations to the 1MDB controversy.

However, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the report is only based on assumptions and no further investigation was conducted.

Azwan said his appointment today is a credit to the Umno Youth movement and vowed to inspire the youths.

Believes in universal narrative

He also pledged to support the deradicalistion agenda of Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

"I want society to take on a more universal narrative, that is to ensure peace and harmony.

"We will uphold this in the context of building a better future," said Khairul Azwan, who is also chairperson of Akedemi Pemuda Umno Malaysia.

Azwan holds Masters degree in management from Open University Malaysia.

He has a bachelor's degree in accounting from Cardiff University, Wales.

He is now executive director of Ideal Jacobs Corporation (M) Bhd, director of Biosis Group Bhd and visiting lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) in Tronoh.

He is also chairperson of Yayasan Bina Upaya Darul Ridzuan and YBU Holdings Sdn Bhd chairperson.
