Cop among two couples detained for firearm smuggling

Police detained two couples in two separate cars yesterday, including a policewoman, for their alleged involvement in smuggling firearms into the country and criminal activities.

Sources close to the investigation said a team from the State Police Contingent picked up the four suspects, aged between 26 and 41, during a crime prevention patrol duty at Km9.7 of the North-South Expressway near Changlun at about 10.40pm.

In the first case, police found a sling bag that contained a Luger pistol, a round of bullets and 30 pieces of 9mm bullets wrapped in a Thai-language newspaper in a Perodua Myvi, driven by a husband and wife, aged 31 and 26 respectively, a source told Bernama.

The source also said they found a set of police uniform that belonged to the 26-year-old woman, who is a police constable in Kuala Lumpur.

"Initial investigations revealed that her husband admitted that the pistol, which he bought for RM3,000 from a man in Thailand, belonged to him," said the source, adding that the man just wanted to keep the pistol.

Subsequently police checked another couple, aged 41 and 35, from Selangor who were travelling in a BMW but no firearms were found.

However, checks on the 41-year-old man revealed that he had several criminal records for gang robbery, criminal intimidation and theft, and had been on the police wanted list for voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons.

The source also said the four suspects had been taken to the Kubang Pasu police headquarters to facilitate investigations under Section 8 of the Firearms Act (Heavier Penalty) 1972 and Section 8A of the Firearms Act 1960.

Meanwhile, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar congratulated the team for the success.

"Congratulations Kedah CID and Bukit Aman (Federal Police) CID for successfully detaining four people in Changlun, Kedah this morning and seizing a (smuggled) pistol," he said in his official Twitter account today.
