PAS has offered its president Abdul Hadi Awang as negotiator to resolve the situation in Aleppo, Syria, on behalf of Malaysia.

PAS Youth deputy chief Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi said Hadi can take up the role in his capacity as vice-president of the International Union of Muslim Scholars.

"PAS is willing to become the mediator, through our president's position in IUMS, so Malaysia can negotiate with other Islamic nations to resolve the Syria issue," he added in a statement.

This after the Syrian government declared it has taken over Aleppo, the last rebel-held area, in a bloody battle supported by Russia and Iran. Some 50,000 civilians were caught in the crossfire.

"PAS Youth urges all parties to act to ensure the situation does not escalate and to allow humanitarian aid to reach all victims, especially civilians.

"President Bashar al-Assad must take responsibility for the humanitarian crisis of our time. We urge for democratic political solution to bring about peace," said Muhammad Khalil.

He said the Battle of Aleppo is a culmination of a five-year proxy war between Arab countries and the west, who supported an armed struggle to topple a legitimate government.

"PAS consistently rejects cruel leaders, but we also reject foreign intervention where the objectives diverge from the needs of the people and Islamic interests.

"We urge Muslim nations to set aside political and sectarian differences to help restore the situation and find a peaceful and diplomatic path to end the Syrian conflict," he added.

As such, he urged the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) to step up and use its influence to restore peace in Syria.

"The interest of the public and Muslims should be the priority in handling the Syrian case, and other conflicts which arose from the Arab Spring," he said.
