There will be another Rohingya solidarity rally, this time in Selangor, after a similar high-profile rally in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 4 that saw Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang sharing the stage.

The "Himpunan Pedulu Ummah: Pray4Rohingya" was announced by Selangor Humanitarian Fund founder Yunus Hairi.

Yunus, who is also Selangor executive councillor in charge of Islamic affairs, Malay customs and country and traditional village development, made the announcement at the Selangor Secretariat building lobby in Shah Alam this afternoon.

He said the rally will take place at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam on Dec 23, from 6pm to 11.30pm.

Yunus (photo) said the rally is expected to be attended by Hadi and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) representative to Myanmar, Syed Hamid Albar, at which they will deliver their speeches.

"This is not the first time we are organising such an effort, but it has to be continued to pressure the Myanmar government," he told the press conference.

The Myanmar government has downplayed the killing of ethnic Rohingyas in the country and accused other countries raising the issue, including Malaysia, of interfering in its internal affairs.

However, Malaysia insists that the issue poses a threat to regional security, including Malaysia's, as Rohingya refugees try to escape to neighbouring countries on top of concerns that militant elements may also infiltrate.

Yunus said the rally would be backed by at least 17 NGOs and would also be graced by local celebrities.
