It is a tradition that come the end of December, Malaysiakini takes its readers through the best and the worst news of the year.

This year, among others, we see dramatic changes in the country’s political landscape as the fallout from the 1MDB scandal continues.

Who would have thought that Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Anwar Ibrahim could come full circle – to work together which they once did, this time to dislodge their former party from power? And who would have thought that Umno and PAS would be working together to strengthen Islamic laws?

And while PM Najib Razak was cleared by attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali, other countries are taking action on alleged money laundering linked to the 1MDB scandal, including a US civil suit to recover US$1 billion in assets in what the Department of Justice described as the largest single action ever brought under its Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative.
